Stripes and Spheres

This is another one of my kaleidoscopes.  I really like the contrasts of the different woods in the handmade body of the kaleidoscope, and they seem to look richer in monochrome.  It has five different glass marbles that can be swapped out for different effects when looking through it.  I really need to learn more about lighting and invest in different lights, flashes, etc...

  1. It's a great photo. I understand what you mean about lighting. I know so little about it. It's an area that I also want to invest, and improve. If you come across information that is helping you, please share it.

  2. Yes, light is not my strong suit either. I've made a few attempts, but it's something that needs to be practiced. I would start with a desk lamp that you can aim and point, and just start moving it around to create highlights and shadows where you want them. Then, put a diffuser in front of the light and see the different effect you get - softness and harshness, etc. Diffuse from the side, the top and and the front. A piece of tissue paper, or even something more opaque like white card stock. Perhaps a colored piece of tissue for a color light effect. That's about as much as I experimented with lighting anyway...

With marbles, they would be fun to light indirectly from behind to get some cool effect when shooting them head on. Just a though. This is a cool photo in b/w with the wood textures and the glass marble textures. Lots of tones going on with the mixed materials of wood and glass. Nice job!!

BTW, I made the wall this week on Monocrhome weekly! Woo hoo! (the bridge shot). My second wall appearance! It's like it's become my weekly goal... haha!
